John Wieland joined the Jacksonville Symphony in 1989 as Principal Bass, a position he held until stepping down into the section in 2022. Prior to joining the Jacksonville Symphony, he had held the positions of Principal Bass with the Virginia Symphony, the Oklahoma Symphony and the Orquésta Sinfónica de Minería in Mexico City, as well as spending many summers with the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder. He holds a Bachelors Degree from the New School of Music in Philadelphia (now part of Temple University); his principal teachers being Michael Shahan (Associate Principal of the Philadelphia Orchestra) and the late H. Stevens Brewster, Principal of the National Symphony.
