Darryl Manley
Associate Principal Viola
Darryl Manley joined the Jacksonville Symphony as Associate Principal Violist in September 2023. A passionate chamber musician, he has studied with renowned ensembles including the Pacifica Quartet, Shanghai Quartet, St. Lawrence String Quartet, Danish String Quartet, Berg String Quartet and the Takács Quartet. His mentors include distinguished artists such as Stephen Wyrczynski, Kim Kashkashian, Patricia McCarty, Wesley Collins, Christian Colberg and Robert Diaz.
Darryl has excelled in numerous competitions, winning the bronze medal at the Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition, first prize at the Plowman International Chamber Music Competition and was invited to compete in the Carl Nielsen International Chamber Music Competition. His chamber collaborations have included performances with esteemed musicians such as Emile Naoumoff, Orion Weiss and Steve Cohen.
Darryl graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Rollins College, where he studied Physics and Viola Performance. He continued his studies in the Artist Diploma program at Montclair State University under the tutelage of the Shanghai Quartet, receiving a full scholarship. He earned a Master’s degree from Indiana University, where he studied with Stephen Wyrczynski, Ed Gazouleas and Jorja Fleezanis. During his time at IU, he was a member of the quartet in residence and served as principal violist of the concert orchestra. Prior to joining the Jacksonville Symphony, Darryl pursued his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Kentucky.
Darryl currently resides in Jacksonville with his wife, violinist Jeehee Kang, and their two cats, Lemmy and Chino.
