Aaron Norlund is thrilled to join the Jacksonville Symphony as Acting Second Trumpet for the 2022-23 season. He has led a diverse freelance career in the Atlanta metro area, performing with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Opera, Chattanooga Symphony, Sarasota Orchestra, and numerous other regional groups. Aaron was a Fellow with the New World Symphony from 2015-2018.

While orchestral playing is his primary focus, Aaron greatly enjoys mixed chamber performance, and he has arranged several works for performance on trumpet, including Debussy’s beautiful Sonata for Flute, Viola (flugelhorn), and Harp. Like many, Aaron began playing in middle school. When his mother asked “Why trumpet?”, he shrugged and said, “Because I want to be heard!” He has also enjoys creating free educational content for young trumpeters on his “Trombahonker’s Practice Studio” YouTube channel.

Aaron holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. In addition to music, Aaron’s studies have included Oceanography, Marine Biology, Political and Resource Geography, and Photography. He holds a USCG Ocean Master Captain’s license, is an ASA Sailing Instructor, Wilderness First Responder, and Master SCUBA diver. Aaron has worked as educator and Mate with the Sea Education Association, a collegiate program taking place aboard traditionally-rigged tall ships.

When not practicing and performing,  Aaron loves boating and SCUBA diving and looks forward to exploring the St. Johns and coastal Jacksonville. He also loves making great espresso, is regularly assigned to grill duty at barbecues, and looks forward to backpacking in the Rockies every summer. Aaron still calls Atlanta home, where his husband is a physician, and his Border Collie, Ollie, waits with waning patience for a frisbee to be thrown.
