Barber and Bolero

Thur Sept 23, 2010 at 7:30pm Fri, Sat Sept 24, 25, 2010 at 8pm:
We celebrate Samuel Barber’s centennial in American style with his Piano Concerto featuring one of our country’s most gifted young artists, Terrence Wilson. The hypnotic power of Ravel’s Boléro is a feast of tonal color and Prokofiev’s score to Romeo and Juliet infuses passion and drama to the evening.

American Fusion

Thurs Oct 14, 2010 at 7: 30pm:
The journey begins with some down-home cookin’ and home-spun music. Copland gets the dance going with music from Rodeo. Still’s pioneering work gives a symphonic dimension to the blues, inspired by Dunbar’s dialectic poems. Gershwin incorporates a wealth of blues and jazz idioms into Porgy and Bess, which he considered to be his finest work.

Handel’s Messiah

Sat, Dec 4 at 8 pm:
Handel’s masterpiece, Messiah, is perhaps the most famous oratorio ever written and unique among Handel's other ones. A German who initially made his fame writing Italian operas for English audiences, Handel found in the 1730s that the public wanted something new and more understandable. After composing some three dozen Italian operas, works of great musical brilliance but often dramatically inert and set to mediocre librettos, he shifted his energies to creating what are in essence sacred English operas.
