Florida Times-Union "Voices"
By Richard A. Salkin
The third-grader holds a violin under her chin while an adult steadies it for her. There's a look of newfound pride on her young face. Behind her: the signature architectural details of Jacoby Symphony Hall at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts.
The girl in the pencil drawing is one of 6,600 area students participating in Communities In Schools, a national organization that encourages at-risk children to stay in school. The artwork, titled "Setting the Stage" and created by local artist/photographer Chad Weeks, was commissioned to capture the essence of CIS' work and the magic of the Jump Start Strings program, in partnership with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra.
