The Musicians
Lois Elfenbein Gosa (Violin)
Member of the JSO: Since 1970
Education: Florida State University, student of Richard Burgin and Eliot Chapo; Post-graduate work at FSU, New York University and Indiana University
Other Instruments Played: Lois actually started out playing the harmonica at age seven, which is the instrument her father played. Later she took to the piano, and the violin and viola soon followed.
Why the violin: A string quartet came to perform at her elementary school. When asked who would like to play in the string orchestra the following year, Lois raised her hand. She’s been playing violin ever since.
Ensembles: Lois can also be heard performing in the Owen String Quartet and various chamber music ensembles.
Why Music: “As an individual, I can’t create a Brahms symphony,” says Lois. She cherishes the precious moments with her colleagues over the years, joining forces to make glorious music.
Family: Lois has four children, David, Rebecca, Andrea and Elizabeth. (Yes, they have all received musical training.) She is married to JSO Bassist Dale Gosa.
Last CD purchased: Daughter Rebecca Zapen’s first release, Hummingbird.
Instrument: Lois plays an Italian violin made by Gaetano Pasta in 1730.
Favorite Memories in Jacksonville Symphony history: “My very first rehearsal. It was the orchestra’s comeback after a canceled season in 1970. I have had the thrill of seeing our daughter Elizabeth perform as a soloist with the JSO; my student Wency Ecclesiastre winning first place in a JSYO Concert Competition and soloing with the JSO. I fondly remember my solo performance, as well as my husband Dale’s solo with the JSO.”
Other favorite memories: The 1972 performances at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, Jack Benny’s gala concert and the grand opening festival of the symphony’s new home.
Favorite Composer: J.S. Bach: “His music is joyous, profound, complex and full of awe.”
Hobbies/Leisure Activities: Chamber music, singing in the choir, playing piano, walking, reading and spending time with family and friends.
Favorite book: The Bible
Treasure: “Every day.”
