Why the violin? “My mother and grandmother were violinists. Grandmother Glynda, my namesake, was a soloist with radio orchestras & social orchestras in the 20’s and 30’s in New York and Miami.”

Family: Wife of Cliff Newton, JSO principal trumpet player. Glynda and Cliff have two children, Victoria and Phillip. Victoria has her Masters in Oboe Performance from New England Conservatory. She is married and is living in Los Angeles, pursuing her career. Phillip lives in Jacksonville and is a part-time trumpet player.

Instrument: Glynda’s violin was made in Italy by Ettone Sofritti in 1927.

Favorite moments with the JSO: Performing with Luciano Pavarotti, Frederica von Stade and Kiri Te Kanawa – all in the same month!

Favorite styles of music: Glynda has a fascination with the music of Gustav Mahler. She also listens to Baroque string music, Ravi Shankar, Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles.

Other life: Glynda has a fascination for all types of theatrical costuming. Copying Haut Couture designs, creating Star Trek Klingon fashions, wearing 16th Century St. Augustine Spanish dresses and Southern Belle finery from the Civil War era are just a sample of her eclectic fascination.

 

Hobbies: Glynda has been involved with Boy and Girl Scouting for many years. She is quite involved with the Jacksonville Sister Cities Program and is co-chair with husband Cliff, of the Nantes, France Committee.

 

Performance experience: Glynda performs regularly with her Belle Fleur String Quartet at various and numerous functions. She also performs quite regularly with the Palm Court Society Orchestra, which she and her husband Cliff founded in 2000.
