Cliff Newton (Trumpet)

Member of the JSO: Since 1978

Hometown: St. Cloud, Florida

Education: Bachelor’s degrees in Music Performance and Music Education from the University of South Florida, Master’s in Trumpet Performance with an emphasis on college-level teaching from the University of Northern Colorado

Why the trumpet? Like many professional musicians, Cliff began his musical study in a public school band. Growing up in tiny St. Cloud, where few people could conceive of an aspiration toward a musical career, his early motivation was simply the enjoyment of music and the participation in a musical group. While in high school, Cliff became more serious about the trumpet and a future in music and so began his private study with Don Owen, principal trumpet player of the Florida Orchestra.

Family: Wife is Glynda Newton, a violinist in the JSO. They have two children, Victoria and Phillip. Victoria has her Masters in Oboe Performance from New England Conservatory. She is married and is living in Los Angeles, pursuing her career. Phillip lives in Jacksonville and is a part-time trumpet player.

Performance experience: Cliff performed in the NORAD Band in Colorado Springs and taught trumpet at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada. He has taught at Jacksonville University and the University of North Florida and gives private lessons. He also performs as soloist with the Belle Fleur String Quartet and the Palm Court Society Orchestra.

Hobbies, interests, community: Cliff is a Goose wrangler, gardener, beekeeper, and fisherman. His most recent passion is the Argentine Tango. When he’s not practicing or rehearsing, you’ll find him on the dance floor with his wife.
