The Musicians
Christopher Sales (Bassoon)
Member of the JSO: Since 2009
Hometown: Kingsport, Tennessee
Education: Bachelor of Music from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 2007; Master of Music from the Juilliard School.
Why the bassoon? The bassoon is so different from all the other instruments. Bassoonists not only play melody and harmony lines, but also secondary melodies and even effects. The bassoon is such a chameleon that most of the time, people don't notice it until it isn't playing anymore.
Performance Experience: "Aside from the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, I have played in the Charleston Symphony, the New World Symphony, and the Norrköping Symphony. As for concertos, I have performed with the Aspen Academy of Conducting Orchestra, the Charleston Symphony, and the Governor’s School for the Arts in Virginia Beach. I have attended the Sarasota, the Bellingham, and Aspen Music Festival as a student, and as a teacher at the Eastern Music Festival.
Other Instruments Played: Piano Family: A beautiful fiancé named Erin, and a little black cat named Stout
Favorite composer / styles of music: Brahms Symphonies, Sviatoslav Richter’s recording of Rachmaninoff’s second piano concerto, Horowitz recordings of most anything, but especially music of Russian composers. Bach, Rouse, Carter, Ligeti, and much more.
Hobbies and Interests: When not working on reeds or playing music, Christopher has a fervid love for hockey, ultimate Frisbee and good coffee.
Best about Jacksonville: "I love ultimate Frisbee in Memorial Park as well as the Jazz Festival."
