Anthony Anurca (Contrabassoon)

Member of the JSO: Since 2010

Hometown: Jacksonville Beach

Education: BM at University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music

Anthony Anucra is our first ever Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra alumnus to become a core orchestra member.

Why the Contrabassoon? He first began playing the piano and violin at an early age, as he has always had a love for music. He picked up his first bassoon at the age of 12, and fell in love with it. From here on out, the rest is history.

Performance Experience: From 2004-2007, he was a member of The New World Symphony America's Orchestra Academy of Miami Beach. He also played with several orchestras in the Southeast including: The Savannah Philharmonic, Charleston Symphony, The Florida Orchestra, The Palm Beach Opera, and the Grammy nominated Seraphic Fire and Firebird Chamber Orchestra. During the 2009-10 season, he served a one-year position as Associate Principal and Contrabassoon with the Kansas City Symphony. After that year, he was appointed 2nd Bassoon and Contrabassoon for the 2010-11 season with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. Early on, had the opportunity to play during the summers at the Spoleto Music Festival and Aspen Music Festival where he studied with Nancy Goeres.

Other Instruments played: Bassoon

Favorite composer / styles of music: To Anthony, good music is good music no matter what the genre and the collaboration between different types of music and artists, he believes, leads to unbound creativity and nurturing of the soul.

Hobbies, interests: In addition, to his love for orchestral music, Anurca has recorded the bassoon and contrabassoon with his childhood friends and independent rock artists,  Richard Colado (aka. Rickolus and lead singer of Julius Airwave) and Ben Cooper (aka. Radical Face and duo Electric President), on their respective albums and projects.
