The Musicians
Aaron Brask (Horn)
Member of the JSO: Since 1986
Education: Interlochen Arts Academy, Bachelor of Music from Boston University
Performance experience: Aaron has played with numerous orchestras and festivals. He performed with the Florida Orchestra in Tampa as second horn, and in 2001 and 2002 he toured Europe with the American Sinfonietta. Aaron is also active on the local music scene, performing eclectic and jazz-inspired collaborations with other musicians at venues such as The Brick.
Summer festivals: Aaron has performed at the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood, Massachusetts, the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California, and the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. He has been a member of the Glimmerglass Opera since 1990.
Recordings: Aaron has made four recordings thus far: Music for the Holiday Season, J.S. Bach, Can I get You Anything?, and The Guaraldi Sessions. Each project explores music that is not always associated with the horn. Complete information on Aaron's recordings can be found at www.LastHorn.com.
Scion of a musical family: Aaron’s mother is a singer, his father is a pianist, and his brother is a drummer. When Aaron was four, he used to watch his eight-year-old brother play with the University of Florida band. Aaron wasn’t particularly impressed, until years later when he realized how unusual it was for an eight-year-old to be playing at that level. His mother suggested playing French horn in summer band.
Nine-ball: Aaron’s favorite hobby is the mentally challenging game of nine-ball. He is an avid player and thoroughly enjoys the thought process accompanied with it. “When you break the balls up, they never end up in the same place, so you have to adapt. It’s kind of like life.” The late, great billiard player, Harry Garfinkle, introduced Aaron to the game. “To see Harry shoot was poetry in motion.”
Born late: Aaron claims that his love for vinyl records and his laid-back manner are clues that he was born 50 years too late. Unlike most people today, Aaron claims to be “not always in a hurry.”
