Michael Butterman

Michael Butterman, conductor
Kirill Gerstein, piano

Hailstork, An American Port of Call
Liszt, Piano Concerto No. 2*
Beethoven, Symphony No. 3,

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 was dedicated to Napoleon, until his beloved hero crowned himself Emperor. He carved the title out with a knife and renamed it “Heroic Symphony” to champion the rights of all mankind. “Eroica” became the turning point for musical Romanticism and forced the world to rethink who was the true conqueror – Bonaparte or Beethoven?

The concert also features Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2, played by Kirill Gerstein, a Russian prodigy who taught himself to play jazz as a child while listening to his parents’ record collection. The concert will open with a piece from contemporary African-American composer Adolphus Hailstork, titled "An American Port of Call," which he wrote to commemorate the Harborfest celebration in Norfolk, Virginia.

Click to the Symphony's blog on Jacksonville.com. Michael Butterman shares his thoughts on why Beethoven's music resonates so powerfully with us today.
