ENSEMBLES

The JSYO is organized into six performing ensembles, accommodating different levels of ability and skill. All orchestras have weekly rehearsals and perform between three and six concerts throughout the season.

JUMP START STRINGS
Rocky Di Georgio, conductor

1st year beginning level string orchestra caters to the young musician just starting the study of a string instrument, from helping to choose the appropriate instrument for the student to establishing proper practice and rehearsal techniques.  The student begins their JSYO career in the week long Jump Start Strings Camp each August.  Comparable levels - Beginner to ASTA Grade 1, Suzuki Method Book 1.

FOUNDATION STRINGS
Rocky Di Georgio, conductor

2nd year beginning level string orchestra follows on the work done in Jump Start Strings.  Comparable levels - Beginner to ASTA Grade 1, Suzuki Method Books 1-2.

JUNIOR STRINGS
Ilana Kimel, conductor

String orchestra for beginning and intermediate level musicians already several years into the study of his/her instrument. The musicians begin to make music with other musicians of similar skills in a conducted ensemble. Music theory is introduced to develop the student's musicianship in preparation for advancement to the Premiere Strings. Learning to play in an ensemble with others is an important first step on the road to success on an instrument.    Comparable levels - ASTA Grade 2, Suzuki Method Books 3-4.

PREMIERE STRINGS
Marguerite Richardson, conductor

String orchestra for intermediate and advancing level musicians. Musicians in this ensemble are shifting into different positions and fine tuning their ensemble skills before proceeding to the Repertory Orchestra.  Comparable levels - ASTA Grade 3, Suzuki Method Books 4-5.

REPERTORY ORCHESTRA
Scott Gregg, conductor
A full symphony orchestra at the intermediate level that strives to build a strong foundation in string, wind, brass and percussion training in orchestral performance.  Repertoire is chosen to build reading and ensemble skills and experience.  Members may continue on to the Philharmonic or finish their JSYO experience in the Repertory Orchestra.  Comparable levels - ASTA Grade 4, Suzuki Method Books 6-8, FBA Grade 4.

PHILHARMONIC
Scott Gregg, conductor
A full orchestra for advanced and pre-professional students of orchestral literature.  Many of its members started in the String Ensembles and/or Repertory Orchestra and earned their positions through their growth in experience and skill.  Philharmonic musicians have the opportunity to perform the standard orchestra literature in the original editions.  Repertoire is chosen to challenge and prepare young musicians for the future - whether they end up studying at the conservatory level or embarking upon a lifetime of musical appreciation as amateurs.    Comparable levels - ASTA and FBA Grade 5 and above.

JSYO CHAMBER MUSIC PROGRAM
Marguerite Richardson, program coordinator
Program available to Philharmonic musicians interested in the exploration of repertoire written for small groups of players (10 and fewer).  Performing music in small groups of players teaches musical individuality and creativity.  It provides an experience different from the orchestra experience and is part of a complete music education.  This is a separate program from the Philharmonic involving a separate tuition fee.
