Singing the High Notes for More than 25 Years

An exciting 2011-12 season, as one of three candidates will be selected as next Chorus director

With some of the First Coast area’s finest voices, Jacksonville Symphony Chorus members come from all walks of life who share the spirit of singing great choral music. The roster also includes many professional musicians and skilled amateur performers.

During the 2011-12 season, three alternating directors will be rehearsing the Chorus, each in the running to be appointed as the next director. Dr. Timothy Snyder, from Jacksonville University, is preparing the Chorus for the November 17-19 performance of Prokofiev’s “Alexander Nevsky.” Dr. Cara Tasher, from University of North Florida, takes the helm during the Holiday season for “Messiah” and “Holiday Pops.” She is also rehearsing the chorus for “La Boheme” on February 11, 2012. Donald McCullough, former music director of the Master Chorale of Washington at the Kennedy Center, will rehearse the chorus for Beethoven’s “Ninth Symphony” on May 10-12, 2012. For the past ten years the chorus was led by Jon O. Carlson, who recently retired from this position.

With more than 25 yChorusears of making great music with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, the all-volunteer Jacksonville Symphony Chorus has sung for many landmark Symphony events. Performance highlights include Mahler’s “Resurrection” Symphony for the tenth anniversary of Jacoby Symphony Hall and Orff’s “Carmina Burana” for the Jacksonville Symphony’s first-ever commercial recording. The Chorus has also sung in each of the Jacksonville Symphony’s annual grand opera productions.

Jacksonville Symphony Chorus auditions are scheduled in August and January. To join voice with the Jacksonville Symphony Chorus, call 354-5479, ext. 221 for audition and membership information. For more information, email Liz McAlhany, Chorus Manager
