The Firebird
Sun, Jan 29, 2012 at 3 p.m.
- Fabio Mechetti, conductor
- Featuring giant shadow puppets by Madcap Puppet Theater
The Firebird was composed as a ballet in 1919 by Igor Stravinsky. With the grace and beauty of shadow puppetry, a style developed in China over 2,000 years ago, Madcap Puppet Theatre creates a visual feast with Stravinsky's wonderfully narrative symphonic music. The Firebird is the one of the oldest known stories in the annals of fable, beloved in Russian literature for centuries, and in ancient Egypt as the legend of the Phoenix.
The main characters are Prince Ivan; the Firebird; and Kastchei the Magician. In the story, Ivan captures the Firebird and decides to free her. In return the Firebird gives the boy a magic feather that will bring her to his side when he needs help. Seeing that the boy has the magic feather, Kastchei unleashes his minion to combat Ivan but through Ivan’s compassion and the return of the Firebird, Kastchei the Magician is finally defeated.
