Main Information Ensembles Auditions Conductors Members Only

 

The JSYO serves 300 talented musicians from all over Northeast Florida through a program of 8 ensembles - two full symphonies and six string ensembles - that vary by repertoire and technical advancement. The JSYO season correlates roughly with the local school calendar, approximately September through May with holiday breaks. Students are selected for admission and placement through competitive auditions held each spring. Students interested in auditioning for the JSYO should view audition requirements - coming soon.

Philharmonic

Comparable Levels: ASTA Grade 5/6, FOA Grade A, FBA Grade 5 and Up

The JSYO Philharmonic consists of some of the most advanced and pre-professional musicians in Northeast Florida. Members range from high school through college, performing challenging works in the standard orchestral literature. Philharmonic students also have the opportunity to participate in chamber music, the Young Artists Concerto Competition, and to perform side-by-side with the Jacksonville Symphony. Students also participate in a 3-day retreat to focus on team building and ensemble playing.

Repertory Orchestra

Comparable Levels: ASTA Grade 4, FOA Grade B, FBA Grade 4, Suzuki Method Books 6-8

Repertory Orchestra consists of intermediate and advanced musicians, typically in middle and high school. This full orchestra performs standard works from the orchestral literature. Repertory Orchestra students also have the opportunity to participate in chamber music and to perform side-by-side with the Jacksonville Symphony. Students also participate in a day-long retreat to focus on team building and ensemble playing.

Premiere Strings

Comparable Levels: ASTA Grade 3/4, FOA Grade C, Suzuki Method Books 3-5

Premiere Strings is comprised of string players at an intermediate and advancing level. This ensemble performs a combination of original music and arrangements of standard orchestral repertoire. Members are generally in middle school or early high school. Students also participate in a day-long retreat to focus on team building and ensemble playing.

Encore Strings

Comparable Levels: ASTA Grade 2, FOA Grade D, Suzuki Method Books 3-4

Encore Strings is a string orchestra for intermediate level musicians. Musicians in this ensemble are several years into study on a string instrument and are familiar with ensemble playing.

Foundation Strings II

Comparable Levels: ASTA Grade 1 – 1 ½, Grade E, Suzuki Method Books 1-2

Foundation Strings II is a string orchestra for advancing beginner musicians recent to orchestral playing.

Foundation Strings I

Comparable Levels: ASTA Grade 1, FOA Grade E, Suzuki Method Early Book 1

Foundation Strings I is a beginning level string orchestra for musicians just starting their studies, including helping students choose an instrument. Students participate in string camp at the beginning of each season to jump start music skills, instrument technique, and establish proper practice and rehearsal methods.

Foundation Strings II (Clay County) is a string orchestra for advancing beginner musicians recent to orchestral playing. Held at the Wehner School of the Arts JSYO satellite site.
