Symphony turns to art world for inspiration

Michael Colina was driving into New York City on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, when the attack on the World Trade Center forced him to turn back to his home in the suburbs.

Like most Americans, his first reaction was outrage.

"I was ready for revenge," said Colina, who has since moved with his wife, Robin Halpin, to Ponte Vedra Beach. "I thought it was time to fight darkness with darkness."

But events that followed cooled Colina's rage. His growing ambivalence about America's response turned to angry disappointment when the news about the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib broke.

"If we are willing to lower ourselves to the level of our enemies, we lose," the 61-year-old composer said in a recent interview.   LInk to full article

'Pictures at an Exhibition'

Michael Colina's "Los Caprichos," Alberto Ginastera's "Harp Concerto" and Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" will be performed Thursday through Saturday at the Times-Union Center.

Performances: 7:30 p.m. Thursday and 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday with Words on Music one hour before the performance.

Michael Colina's orchestral piece, "Los Caprichos," is based on these 11 Goya prints, which will be projected on video screens during the performance.
