A Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra supporter for 6 decades

For more than six decades, Marsha Edwards Berdit has loved the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra.

She was present at its creation in 1949, helping sell tickets to the inaugural season, then sitting in the audience with her husband at the George Washington Hotel as the symphony gave its first public performance.

She was delighted, despite the new orchestra’s flaws.

“They weren’t the first class symphony they are now,” Berdit said. “But if the brass was a little off, that was OK. They were wonderful. They were wonderful even when they weren’t always on cue.”
